Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the moderating effects of residents’ demographic attributes on the relationship between perceptions of hotels’ social responsibility (HSR) practices and overall attitude toward tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

Perceptions of HSR were examined via social, economic and environmental dimensions. The research model was investigated with structural equation modeling and multigroup analyses.

Findings

The findings show that residents’ perceptions of HSR had a positive impact on their attitude toward tourism and that their demographic attributes had a moderating effect on this relationship.

Originality/value

Although there have been many papers on stakeholders’ returns to corporate social responsibility practices implemented by hotels, residents’ returns to these practices are insufficiently investigated. Moreover, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no research on the moderating effect of residents’ demographic attributes on the relationship between perceived social responsibility and overall attitude toward tourism.

居民对酒店社会责任的感知对旅游整体态度的影响摘要目的

本研究考察了居民的人口学特征在其对酒店社会责任实践的感知和对旅游整体态度之间关系的调节效应。

从经济、社会和环境几个维度考察了居民对酒店社会责任的感知。通过结构方程模型和多组分析检验了提出的模型。

Los efectos de la percepción de los residentes en la responsabilidad social del hotel sobre su actitud general hacia el turismoPropósito

Este estudio investiga los efectos moderadores de los atributos demográficos de los residentes acerca de la relación entre las percepciones de las prácticas de responsabilidad social (HSR) de los hoteles y la actitud general hacia el turismo.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

se examinaron las percepciones de HSR a través de dimensiones económicas, sociales y ambientales. El modelo propuesto se llevó acabo con modelos de ecuaciones estructurales y análisis multigrupo.

Hallazgos

los hallazgos muestran que las percepciones de los HSR de los residentes tuvieron un impacto positivo en su actitud hacia el turismo y que sus atributos demográficos tuvieron un efecto moderador en esta relación.

Originalidad/valor

aunque ha habido muchas investigaciones sobre los retornos de las partes interesadas a las prácticas de responsabilidad social corporativa implementadas por los hoteles, los retornos de los residentes a estas prácticas no se investigan suficientemente. Además, aún no hay investigaciones sobre el efecto moderador de los atributos demográficos de los residentes sobre la relación entre la responsabilidad social percibida y la actitud general hacia el turismo.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to first examine tourists’ perceptions of the source credibility and information quality of social media content to see whether they would have an impact on their perceptions of the importance of shared content on social media. The moderating role of gender in this relationship was then examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The research sample was composed of domestic and foreign tourists in Alanya, an important tourist destination in Turkey. The data in the current study were collected by the questionnaire method. The structural relationships in the research were examined using the partial least squares structural equation modeling, and the moderating effect of gender was examined via the partial least squares multiple group analysis.

Findings

According to the research findings, tourists’ perceptions of source credibility regarding social media content had a positive impact on the importance attached to non-participant shared content, whereas their perceptions of information quality had a positive impact on the importance attached to participant shared content. Furthermore, it was also observed that gender had a moderating effect on the relationship between information quality and source credibility perceptions and the importance of shared content on social media.

Originality/value

Two important predictive variables have been examined in the current research in term of customer-generated contents. It has been demonstrated that the effects of these predictive variables on different customer-generated types could be different. Furthermore, it has been determined that the effects of these influences differ according to the gender of the individuals following the content. Thus, the current study provides significant findings to understand the impacts of these variables on the basis of gender.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of social media sharing on tourists’ willingness to pay more (WPM) at destinations. The moderating effects of tourists’ preferred route in decision-making or obtaining information (i.e. central or peripheral routes) were also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was developed and tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Moderating effects of central and peripheral routes were tested using PLS multi-group analysis. Data were collected from 478 tourists in Antalya, Turkey, a sea, sun and sand tourist destination.

Findings

Findings indicate that importance attached to participant sharing (IPS) and importance attached to non-participant sharing (INPS) are significant antecedents of tourists’ WPM intentions. Moderating effects of tourists’ preferred route in decision-making reveal that the effect of IPS on WPM intention is more influential for those with high central route preferences than those with low central route preferences. While the effects of INPS and IPS on WPM intention is more determinative for those with higher peripheral route preferences.

Practical implications

Although it is known by the practitioners that consumer-generated contents are important, this research suggests and supports that these contents trigger tourists to pay higher prices.

Originality/value

How WPM is motivated by others’ social media sharing was not very clear in the literature. Therefore, this research gap was addressed in part by examining the social media sharing structure in terms of whether others posted on organization-related sites or on personal sites.

El papel de las rutas ELM (modelo de probabilidad de elección) en la relación entre el contenido generado por usuarios y la disposición a pagar

Objetivo

El propósito de esta investigación es examinar el impacto de la compartición en redes sociales con la disposición de los turistas a pagar más (willness pay more: WPM) en los destinos. También se examinaron los efectos moderadores de la ruta preferida de los turistas en la toma de decisiones u obtención de información (es decir, rutas centrales o periféricas).

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Se desarrolló y probó un modelo teórico utilizando modelos de ecuaciones estructurales de mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS-SEM). Los efectos moderadores de las rutas centrales y periféricas se probaron mediante análisis multigrupo de PLS. Se recopilaron datos de 478 turistas en Antalya, Turquía, un destino turístico de mar, sol y arena.

Resultados

Los resultados indican que la importancia atribuida a la compartición de los participantes (importance participant sharing: IPS) y la importancia atribuida al la compartición de los no participantes (importance no participant saharing: INPS) son antecedentes importantes de las intenciones de los WPM de los turistas. Los efectos moderadores de la ruta preferida de los turistas en la toma de decisiones revelan que el efecto de IPS en la intención de WPM es más influyente para aquellos con altas preferencias de ruta central que aquellos con bajas preferencias de ruta central. Mientras que los efectos de INPS e IPS en la intención de WPM son más determinantes para aquellos con mayores preferencias de ruta periférica.

Implicaciones prácticas

Aunque los profesionales saben que los contenidos generados por los consumidores son importantes, esta investigación sugiere y respalda que estos contenidos provocan que los turistas paguen precios más altos.

Originalidad/valor

Al no estar clara en la literatura la relación de la WPM con la compartición en redes sociales y existir una brecha de investigación en este aspecto, este trabajo pretende abordar este tema, examinando la estructura de la compartición en redes sociales en términos de si otros publicaron en sitios relacionados con la organización o en sitios personales.

Abstract

Purpose

This study has two main purposes. First, the effects of health anxiety and perceived social value on the intention to consume functional food were examined. Second, the role of health knowledge levels in these relationships was identified.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consisted of 271 restaurant consumers on the European side of Istanbul between August and October 2021. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the research model.

Findings

Restaurant consumers revealed that health anxiety and perceived social value positively affect functional food consumption intentions. Moreover, health knowledge levels have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between health anxiety and functional food consumption intentions.

Originality/value

Thanks to the findings of this study, the roles of health anxiety, perceived social value and health knowledge in functional food consumption were determined, thus filling a vital literature gap.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the relationship between personality traits, travel motivations, perceived destination quality, overall destination satisfaction and behavioral intentions of domestic tourists.

Design/methodology/approach

The quantitative research method was used in the study. A survey technique was used to collect data. Data were applied to incoming domestic tourist to Gaziantep and Sanliurfa cities in Southeast Anatolia of Turkey. The data obtained were analyzed by structural equation modeling.

Findings

The study showed that personal traits “agreeableness” and “conscientiousness” positively affect relaxation motivation. Cultural and relaxation motivations had a positive impact on satisfaction, whereas pleasure-seeking motivation has a negative impact on satisfaction. In addition, overall destination satisfaction is positively affected by destination quality perceptions and affects loyalty in a positive way.

Research limitations/implications

During the literature review phase, no scale was found according to different destination characteristics (cultural, nature and sea destinations). In this regard, developing new scales to measure destination quality in accordance with different destination types would allow comprehending the subject in a more clear and detailed way.

Practical implications

The establishment of relationship between variable examined by this study ensures that product and services provided by the destination reach the correct target audience, which brings along the success to destination. For instance, destination management organizations could get information from travel agencies they work with about the characteristics, and motivations of tourists, and could develop their strategies, and plans, accordingly.

Originality/value

This study has three important contributions. First, revealing the role of personality in tourist behavior; second, their behaviors and attitude before (motivation and personality) during (destination quality and satisfaction) and after visiting (behavioral intentions) were examined; and third, personality, travel motivation, destination quality and satisfaction are discussed together as a model in this study.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the effects of negative tourism impacts, length of residency and nativity on support for tourism development were examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Because understanding the attitudes of local people toward tourism support is complex, this study employed both symmetric (PLS-SEM) and asymmetric (fsQCA) approaches from a holistic perspective. A total of 336 individuals from Cappadocia, one of Turkey's most prominent tourist destinations, were surveyed.

Findings

According to the symmetric method results, respondents' negative perceptions of tourism negatively affect attitudes toward tourism support. Native-born status acts as a moderating variable in the relationship between attitudes toward tourism support and the negative economic impacts of tourism. On the other hand, this study shows that the complex interactions of nativity and the negative impacts of tourism directly affect local people's attitudes toward tourism support.

Practical implications

This study revealed that practitioners should adopt a comprehensive perspective to understand the attitudes of local people toward tourism support.

Originality/value

This study, in addition to the findings obtained via the symmetric method, reveals the complex interaction of the negative impacts of tourism, thus providing a roadmap to improve local people's attitudes toward tourism support by using asymmetric modeling.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the moderating role of employees’ self-experienced social responsibility perceptions in the relationship between employees’ community- and environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions and trust in an organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The corporate social responsibility (CSR) construct is examined in the context of stakeholders including the community, environment and employees. The study was carried out with 438 questionnaires gathered from four- and five-star hotels operating in Alanya, Turkey. The proposed model was tested with the partial least squares method of structural equation modeling. Multiple group analysis was performed to test the moderating effect.

Findings

Findings reveal that employees’ community- and environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions have a positive effect on trust in the organization. Based on the results of multigroup analysis, the effect of employees’ community-oriented social responsibility perceptions on trust in the organization was determined to be more prominent in the group of employees with high self-experienced social responsibility perceptions. However, the same moderating effect could not be determined in relation to environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions and trust in the organization.

Originality/value

Studies focusing on CSR activities were mainly examined at the macro level. Internal stakeholders’ returns to these activities were not sufficiently considered. Contrary to previous studies that examine the link between CSR perceptions measured with Carroll’s pyramid dimensions and organizational trust, the current study examined CSR perceptions with the stakeholder approach. Moreover, the study discovered one of the variables defined as the black box that differentiates the returns that employees provide to CSR activities.

Abstract

Purpose

Gastronomic festivals are important events to bring people together around food-themed activities. This study aimed at determining the relationships between festival quality, memorable food experience, loyalty, behavioral intention, hedonic well-being, and eudaimonic well-being. In this study, festival quality is the independent variable that affects the memorable food experience, the memorable food experience is the independent variable that affects loyalty, and loyalty is the independent variable that affects behavioral intent. Hedonic well-being and eudaimonic well-being are moderating variables. Behavioral intention is the dependent variable, while memorable food experience and loyalty are both dependent and independent variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The population consisted of local tourists visiting Orange Blossom Carnival held in Adana, Turkey. The survey technique and the convenience sampling method were preferred and 545 data were obtained.

Findings

The analysis results showed that all dimensions of the memorable food experience are strongly affected by festival quality. Plus, superior service approach and high value perception dimensions of the memorable food experience have significant effects on loyalty. Furthermore, destination loyalty was found to have a strong effect on behavioral intentions. Moreover, higher levels of Hedonic well-being (HWB) and Eudomenic well-being (EWB) were found to increase the effect of loyalty on behavioral intention; accordingly, the moderator roles of HWB and EWB were determined.

Practical implications

This article provides information that the memorable dining experiences of festival visitors who attend the Orange Blossom Carnival in Adana affect the quality of the festival and their intentions to loyalty. In addition, in the study, it was found that the well-being of carnival visitors had a moderating role in the effect of their loyalty on their behavioral intentions. Therefore, this article provides information on how the food experiences and well-being of the visitors at the gastronomy festival will affect which factors.

Originality/value

According to the findings, gastronomy-based events may affect tourists’ experiences, and tourists’ psychological well-being affects loyalty and behavioral intentions. Destination management organizations can learn about gastronomy-based festivals. The results of the study include a number of theoretical and practical findings for destination management organizations, festival managers, policy makers and academics working in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates to what extent the values perceived by tourists throughout cultural tours impact their overall satisfaction levels and behavioral intentions related to the destination. This study further examines the moderating role of tour guide competency in the relationship patterns concerned.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical data were collected via a survey from 420 foreign tourists who visited Cappadocia and participated in guided cultural tours. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling was used for data analysis.

Findings

Study results reveal that the effects of quality, emotional, monetary and social value perceptions of tourists gained through cultural tour experiences on their overall satisfaction levels and the effects of overall satisfaction on recommendation and revisit intention are positive and significant. Furthermore, the moderating role of tour guide competency is significant and positive in the relationships between quality value and satisfaction and between satisfaction and revisit intention.

Originality/value

This study offers a critical analysis of discoveries concerning the pivotal role of tour guide competency within the cultural tour experience.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationships between motivation and intention to consume local food and between intention to consume local food and intention to visit the destination of that food's origin while examining the moderating effect of risk perception associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from two samples of potential Chinese tourists in the contexts of Italian and Thai food. Data obtained from 264 Chinese respondents for Italian food and 277 Chinese respondents for Thai food were analyzed. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was utilized to test the research model.

Findings

The results indicate that, while motivational factors such as cultural experience, novelty and sensory appeal influence potential Chinese tourists' intention to consume Italian food, motivational factors such as cultural experience, health concern, novelty and sensory appeal influence tourists' intention to consume Thai food. The authors found that intention to consume local food positively influences tourists' intention to visit both destinations (Italy and Thailand). Moreover, tourists' risk perceptions of COVID-19 negatively moderate the effect of cultural experience and novelty on the intention to consume Italian food. Regarding the intention to consume Thai food, the authors found that tourists' risk perceptions have a diminishing effect on all motivational factors.

Originality/value

This pioneering study examines the role of COVID-19-related risk perception on the relationships among motivation of local food consumption, intention of local food consumption and destination visit intention in the context of two destination countries. It reveals cross-country differences of the negative effect pertaining to the risk perceptions of COVID-19, which has important implications for international destination marketing.
